What do you do as a sound designer? What are you passionate about?

Companies and other sound designers in the video game, film, and TV industries hire me to either design sound effects or record hard-to-get sound effects for their products. 

Most of my requests involve capturing extremely LOUD sounds such as race cars, live firing of weapons, explosions, etc. extreme items.

I’m a recording and recording gear addict. Testing out certain microphones, recorders, audio plugins, etc are essential for my work.

How did you get into professional sound design?

I went to both Miami-Dade College and Florida International University for Music Education with a heavy concentration in Music Composition.

While writing music for a video game one day, my client asked if I could also design sound effects for their game. I gave it a shot and the client really liked the results!

Because sound effect libraries (where you can download sound effects to use in projects) back then were very limited, I decided to record my own for better performed sounds and at much higher fidelity. I had already owned various microphones and portable field recorders, so the transition was seamless.

What have been some highlights of your sound design career so far?

Some of my career highlights as a sound designer include working on prominent projects such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare, RIGS, Transformers, to Pennzoil and Mercedes-AMG commercials.

I consider these highlights personally because “sound” was in the foreground of each of these projects, rather than a detail forgotten in the background.

Other highlights include being invited as a guest speaker for Sega, EA (Electronic Arts), Clemson University, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and MIGS (Montreal International Games Summit).

Which Pro Tapes^® products do you use in your sound design work?

I mostly use Pro Gaff^® gaffer tape. It’s able to secure my microphones and microphone cables on speedy race cars going well over 150mph. Moreover, Pro Gaff^® can be removed without damaging expensive paint from vehicles of all types. There is nothing better than Pro Gaff^®!

I also use Pro^® Spike Tape (which comes in several bright colors) to label the end of cables with what brand and model the microphone is and what recording channel to plug it into. This is quite useful when all the cables are the same black color, LOL!

Are there any memorable sound design projects where Pro Gaff^® made a big difference?

When I was hired to fly into Vancouver to record a high-end Mercedes-AMG e63S car. Stunt sounds were needed to present the extremeness that the AMG car can handle. I knew I had to use Pro Gaff^®.  There was so much tire and brake smoke from drifting, cornering, and other maneuvers, but the Pro Gaff^® never fell off, keeping my mics and mic cables secured on the car!

One other memorable project was for the video game, Planet Coaster. I was hired to record various roller coaster sounds. Frontier Developments wanted to capture sounds that would fit a 1st person (rider’s perspective) and 3rd person perspective. Pro Gaff^® was definitely needed to secure mics and mic cables on the rides, especially the fast-spinning ones!

What advice would you share for other sound designers on how to use Pro Tapes^® products to enhance their work?

Think of how orchestras do many rehearsals before a concert. Try applying Pro Tapes^® adhesive tape products on various mics and mic cables, and see how well the items stay on the subject. Remember, safety is number one!

I recently recorded another fast and LOUD race car for a game. It was comical how much tape I had to apply on the car’s side to capture exhaust sounds! I’ll be sure to share more when the game releases.

What I love best about UGlu^®…

What I love best about using UGlu^® is the fact that it adheres to multiple different surfaces, and it comes in different sizes and shapes to hold up different kinds of things.

I gravitate towards our UGlu^® 900 1” x 3’ strips to hold up my lighted garlands. The UGlu^® 200 Family Pack is great too!

Just some examples of surfaces UGlu^® can stick to are concrete, brick, painted drywall, and wood. And in my living room, all of these are present, and my lighted garland holds up on them all thanks to UGlu^®!

Here’s how I decorate with UGlu^® tape for the holidays:

My process is as follows:

First, I plan how to lay out the garland and any decorations I’ll be using in my room. I figured putting the lighted garland around the mantel and the door would highlight my Christmas tree very nicely.

Grab a UGlu^® strip, remove one side of the paper liner, then place the UGlu^® strip where you desire to have the garland or decorations stick to.

Remove the 2^nd paper liner and stick on those decorations! I make sure to apply pressure to ensure that the decorations really adhere to the UGlu^® and the surface underneath.

Then, plug in your lights and watch your room glow! It’s as easy as that!

Here’s the final result! How awesome is that?!

How long have you been practicing art? What have you experimented with before discovering tape?

Well, I began making art 6 years ago, and for two and a half years I’ve worked with tape.

Before discovering Pro® Artist Tape, I used to work with strings, marker pens and wood works. When I started with tapes, I just continued using the patterns and geometries that I used to work with in the other materials.

Your Instagram profile says you are an Ophthalmologist. Is this true? Does it inspire your artwork?

Yes, I am.  I work in both professions, and that’s the reason for the name “Sinergia” (synergy in Portuguese).  

From ophthalmology, my artistic work arose; and my artistic work positively influenced ophthalmology in terms of the manual skill for surgery and the advancement of my reasoning and creative thinking, which is so important in my clinical practice.

What else inspires your artwork? It reminds me of optical illusions!

What inspires me are the studies of optics, theories of vision (how we see, how colors are seen, how the brain processes all this, etc.).  

I study a lot of quantum physics and energy flows.  I am very inspired by sacred geometry – that is, the area of ​​geometry that studies geometric patterns that are found in the universe, nature, cells and in everything that is alive – which are often very present in my work, due to the energetic force that they carry.

It looks like you’re into fashion design, too! Can you talk a little bit about that?

I have a partnership with a clothing brand and I produce digital art designs for the brand.  It is an incredible experience because fashion is also art (but not everything people wear is art), and it is extremely interesting to work on a geometric pattern and see it articulate three-dimensionally through a piece of clothing.  As a geometric artist, this observation is even a kind of study, which greatly enhances the experience.

Which Pro Tapes® products do you use in your work?

I mostly use Pro® Artist Tape from Pro Tapes® to create my works. They have a great texture, have no elasticity and allow curves in the thickness that I use.  I’ve used Pro Gaff® as well, and I like the strength of it, as well as the texture that sometimes is interesting.

I was already using tape for generic collages stuck to walls (just studies about ophthalmology), and I liked to manipulate them.  Also I was using masking tapes for graffiti.

At that time, I researched on the internet how I could use tape to help in my geometric art works and discovered countless artists that were already using tape as their main material. 

I fell in love with tape when I realized it could be a great ally for making straight lines with much less effort than brushes or spray, and with less mess. Pro® Artist Tape optimized my creative process, so I started to use tape in every work.

What does tape allow you to do that other media (for example, paint) does not?

Tape allows me to make straight, homogenous lines, and a unique color, with the same thickness from beginning to end. They have a texture and high relief that interests me a lot.

Plus, In case I miss the exact position I wanted to place the tape within my geometric pattern, I just peel it off and put it elsewhere. No mess, accurate, and with great impact!

What other media / tools do you use along with tape to create your art?

I use stylets to cut the tapes, rulers and compasses, and also digital editing programs to study geometric patterns. In graffiti artworks, I use masking tape, sprays, brushes and paint.

If someone has never used tape to create art, what advice would you give them?

Tapes are very versatile and make it possible to create brilliant artistic styles. But especially if you are an artist and work with geometry, try tapes as soon as possible! You will be impressed by how tape can be a great material for your artwork.

Agility ladders are a great alternative to cardio activities like running. This exercise won’t just push your body out of its comfort zone, it also challenges your brain!
