Filament Strapping Tapes: How to Choose the Right One https://www.protapes.com/blog/filament-strapping-tapes-how-to-choose-the-right-one/ Wed, 29 Jun 2022 15:03:10 +0000 https://www.protapes.com/blog/?p=5330 We’ll take a look at the three most common applications for filament strapping tapes, and give you our product recommendations for each.

The post Filament Strapping Tapes: How to Choose the Right One appeared first on Pro Tapes®.

]]>
There are a considerable number of filament strapping tapes on the market. Each one can vary in tensile strength, backing and adhesive systems. This can make it difficult to choose the appropriate tape for your specific application and needs.

Industries that frequently uses the Filament Strapping tapes include:

 • Packaging/Reinforcement of Heavy Cartons
 • Food & Beverages
 • Electronics
 • Appliances, Furniture, and transportation/delivery of such
 • Automotive-Parts
 • Energy-Oil, Gas, pipe and conduits.
 • General Manufacturing—Metalworking

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the three most common applications for filament strapping tapes, and give you our product recommendations for each.

For packaging and sealing boxes, we recommend Pro 180 Filament Tape

For Bundling, Palletizing and Sealing Corrugated Boxes, Choose Filament Tapes

Filament tape is well known for its bundling and reinforcing capabilities. Tensile strength for filament strapping tapes range from 100lbs to 600lbs per square inch. But what exactly is filament tape?

Filament tape is a pressure sensitive adhesive (or PSA) constructed of polypropylene or polyester film. It is glass-reinforced, with a natural rubber based adhesive system.

The glass (or fiberglass composite material) is embedded directly into the adhesive backing in “filaments.” This provides additional strength and makes the tape resistant to tears, scuffing, splitting and abrasion. These tapes can be reinforced with polyester, polypropylene, fiberglass fibers or yarn filaments.

Our Recommended Filament Tapes

For packaging/sealing boxes, we recommend Pro® 180 (100lbs 4mil utility grade Fiberglass Filament Tape.)

Pro® 180 is designed with an aggressive rubber based adhesive. It is cost effective and has outstanding holding power, making it ideal for packing products for shipment.

For palletizing/bundling, we recommend our Pro® 166 (200lbs 5.5mil Industrial Grade Fiberglass Reinforced Strapping Tape, with a synthetic rubber based adhesive.)

Pro® 166 is a clear, uni-directional filament tape ideal for medium strength duty jobs. Thanks to the tape’s transparency, you can see printed information and illustrations through it.

We recommend Pro 188 strapping tape for securing appliances

For Securing Appliances and Furniture, Choose Tensilized (Non-Filament) Polypropylene Strapping Tapes

Tensilized Polypropylene strapping tape (or, TPP) is also commonly known as Appliance Tape. It is a non-staining, strong tensilized polypropylene backing coated with a rubber adhesive system.

This tape is specially designed to be stain and adhesive transfer resistant. It features high tack, high adhesion, high shear and chemical resistance. It is also waterproof and non-toxic.

TPP or Appliance Tape is ideal for delivery heavy products such as appliances. This PSA naturally shrinks to secure the load when used. Since it does not contain filaments, it will stretch a fair amount before breaking but will instantly snap into place when loads shifts. It has a low elongation and high tensile strength.

Our Recommended Strapping Tape

We recommend Pro® 188 (4.6mils White TPP tape) for closing and bundling appliances and parts (such as refrigerator doors, shelves, etc.) securely in place during transport.

Other applications for Pro® 188 include securing and bundling computers, furniture and office equipment.

We recommend Pro 167 strapping tape for coil tabbing

For Coil Tabbing, Choose Heavy Duty Polypropylene Strapping Tapes

Polypropylene strapping tape is also known as Poly strapping or PP Strap tape. It is a thermosplastic material made with a tensilized polypropylene backing and a rubber adhesive system.

Our Recommended Poly Strapping Tape

Coil tabbing and pipe bundling require a high tensile strength and low stretch.

That’s why we recommend Pro® 167 (300lbs 6mil general purpose polypropylene reinforced glass yarn filament tape.)

Pro® 167 is one of our strongest options for bundling and palletizing heavy items. The glass yarn filaments provide added strength for high impact and elongation, while protecting the tape against delamination.

Over the past few years, adhesive tape products have become increasingly popular in the Janitorial and Facility Maintenance Industries. Part of this demand is due to the wide variety of applications tape can be used for, including electrical work, painting, repair, and more.

Another factor in the demand for quality tape products is an increase in construction projects around the world. Rising economies lead to the construction (and the need for cleaning and maintenance) of more commercial and non-commercial buildings.

Now more than ever, it is important to work with experts to identify the best tools for facility managers and cleaning crews.

With over 45 years of experience in pressure sensitive adhesives, Pro Tapes® is an industry leader you can trust. We provide our Janitorial and Maintenance customers with the most efficient and cost effective tape solutions for a variety of needs.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at the most common tapes needed for maintenance, repair, safety and more that Pro Tapes® offers:

Janitors can use Pro Plus electrical tape for wire protection and color coding.

Tapes for Janitorial Electrical Work and Maintenance

Electrical tape is a type of pressure sensitive adhesive used to insulate electrical wires, cables or other materials that conduct electricity. It is typically made with plastics, but vinyl is the most popular type due to its durability and versatility.

Black is the most popular color of electrical tape for insulating purposes. However, our vinyl electrical tape Pro® Plus comes in 11 different colors that allow for color coding and labeling.

You may also be interested in Pro® Friction, a 15mils cotton fabric electrical tape.

Masking tapes are important for protecting surfaces likes walls and floors during janitorial painting projects.

Masking Tapes for Painting and Surface Protection

Masking tape is most commonly used during painting projects to protect surfaces such as walls and floors, either by covering surfaces directly or by holding up protective sheeting. Other applications for masking tape include light bundling and packaging.

Masking tape features an easy to tear paper backing and a light adhesive which allows for easy unwind. The low level of adhesion make it ideal for delicate surfaces. Masking tape will not leave behind residues or cause damages.

Here are the top masking tape products we recommend facility managers to keep in stock:

Duct Tape is used by janitors for quick fixes, repairs, and patching, whether permanent or temporary.

Duct Tapes for Janitorial Repairs and Patching

Duct tape is a strong, waterproof adhesive. The backing is cloth-based and coated in polyethylene.

In the Janitorial industry, duct tape is commonly used for quick fixes, repairs, and patching; either temporarily or permanently. It can also be used for binding and bundling.

Our duct tapes are available in variety of colors to match different surfaces or applications.

Pro Tapes® offers duct tapes to suit a variety of needs for maintenance and repair:

 • Pro® 100 – 7 mils Economy Grade Duct
 • Pro® 110 – 9 mils General Purpose Grade Duct Tape
 • Pro® 120 – 10 mils Industrial Grade Duct Tape
 • Pro® 130 – 12.5 mils Premium Grade Duct Tape
 • Pro® 148 – 17 mils Heavy Duty 10mils Industrial Premium Grade Duct Tape
 • Pro® 160 – Transparent Duct Tape
Janitorial professionals can use barricade tapes for safety during events.

Safety Barricade Tapes for A/V, Events and More

Barricade tapes perform an important role in supporting safety measures, whether for daily janitorial use or special events such as assemblies, meetings, etc. Janitorial and facility maintenance teams can also help support audio/visual teams with barricade tapes.

Some tapes, like our Caution Ribbon, are actually non-adhesive. Caution Ribbon is a yellow polyethylene tape with caution messaging printed on one side. It is used as a visual warning and to limit access to a work area, which can be critical to safety during repair and maintenance projects.

Other type of safety tapes that do feature an adhesive or sticky side can be used for floor marking or wire and cable hold down. Our Cable Path® adhesive tape protects cables while simultaneously warning passersby of a trip hazard or possible hazardous area.

Other barricade and safety tapes we recommend for janitorial and maintenance include:

Our top 3 DC polyester film tapes provide quick and easy bonding to a variety of substrates, creating a clean and modern look. Read below to learn more!

What is a Double Coated Tape?

Before we take a look at our top 3 premium polyester film tapes, let’s define what double coated means.

“Double coated” tape (commonly abbreviated as DC) is also known as “double sided” or “double faced” tape. That is, it’s an adhesive tape that has adhesive on both sides instead of just one.

Double coated tapes are also typically pressure sensitive tapes, or PSAs. PSAs consist of a film, paper, cloth, foam, or foil carrier that is coated on both sides with a rubber, silicone or acrylic adhesive.

The adhesive is protected by a release liner, which is removed when the tape is applied, or left in place until the surfaces to be bonded to are ready to be attached together. Release liners are commonly paper or films, with a silicone release agent.

A diagram showing the elements of a double coated tape, by Pro Tapes

The primary purpose of a double coated PSA is to stick two surfaces together. Double coated tapes are mainly used for laminating, mounting, splicing, gasketing, sound/vibration dampening, and appliances.

Typically, the adhesive is not visible on the finished product, creating a cleaner and modern design look. This is ideal for many applications, such as signage, windows, skylights, and many more.

Now, let’s take a look at our top 3 premium Double Coated Polyester tapes:

Our Top 3 Premium Double Coated Polyester Tape Products

Our top 3 DC polyester film tapes provide a quick and easy bonding process with moderate temperature resistance. These tapes bond well to a variety of substrates and offer excellent converting and fabricating properties. Duct tape is one of the most popular pressure sensitive adhesives in the market due to its versatility and use for many applications. But how do you choose the right tape for the job?

Before we get into learning how to identify the right roll to grab off the shelf or order a sample of, let’s get some insight into what Duct tape really is.

Duct tape was invented in WW2 and was first called duck tape for its waterproofing properties

Is it Duck, or Duct Tape?

Duct tape was invented during WWII in the 1940’s by a division of Johnson & Johnson.

The US military needed a waterproof tape to keep moisture out of ammunition cases. The early product Johnson & Johnson came up with was called “Duck” tape because it resisted water, similar to how water runs right off a duck’s back.

After the war, the construction industry began using the tape as a handy tool for home construction to seal gaps, make minor repairs, protect surfaces, and patch together ventilation ductwork. It soon became known by a new name: “Duct Tape.”

Manufacturers even swapped the original Army green color of Duct tape to the silver color we know today to better match the ducts it was being commonly applied to.

The construction industry began using duct tape to patch ventilation ducts

What makes Duct Tape so special?

Duct tape has a cloth backing coated with polyethylene, with a rubber based adhesive. Thanks to this, it has unique waterproofing capabilities and strength, yet it can still be easily torn by hand.

It is suitable for both indoor and short term outdoor use because of it is durability and waterproofing characteristics. Pro Tapes® offers specialty Duct tapes that are suitable for longer term outdoor use as well.

These days, Duct tapes also come in a wide assortment of materials and colors.

How do I choose the right Duct Tape?

Not all Duct tapes are created equally! Some have thicker adhesive and tougher backing. Duct tape comes in different grades too, which is one of the factors that help determine the right application it should be used for.

Let’s take a look at some of the factors that can help you decide which Duct Tape to choose:

 • Strength characteristics (Thickness, adhesion, tensile strength)
 • Job environment (Conditions tape will be exposed such as high or low temperatures, dust, moisture, UV light, chemicals, friction)
 • Required bonding duration (will it be used for a short term temporary solution, or as long term permanent solution)
 • Hand tear-ability (and whether that is a requirement)
 • Conformability to uneven surfaces (curved, many corners, etc.)
 • Application surface (wood, metal, plastic, etc)

Are there different kinds of Duct Tape? YES!

Today duct tape comes in many colors, grades and other different properties

Let’s look at 5 different types of Duct Tape manufactured today:

General Purpose Grade

Designed for every day applications such as strapping, bundling at a job site, temporary and permanent repairs. See Pro® Duct 100 and Pro® Duct 110

Premium Grade

Conforms well to irregular surfaces, holds tightly around corners, bends and curves. Suitable for higher demand applications such as patching, bundling, and reinforcing. Some tapes offered in this category comply with UL 723.

See Pro® Duct 120 and Pro® Duct 139. We also offer a special camo-printed duct tape with Pro® Camo Duct, and a transparent duct tape in Pro® 160.

Industrial Grade

Can be used for most general purpose applications, but are made with a stronger adhesive coating and thicker mil. Ideal for more demanding jobs in the commercial and industrial settings.

See Pro® Duct 120 and Pro® 130.

Heavy Duct Tape

Intended for indoor/outdoor use; excellent for use as a moisture barrier in typical applications such as HVAC, automotive and commercial. It is able to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations from both cold and hot air pressure. Some may offer additional features such as flame retardancy.

See Pro® 132, Pro® 309, and Pro® 148.

Stucco Duct Tape

Engineered for outdoor use. It is a solid polyethylene that has no cloth or vinyl impregnation. It provides good adhesion and sticks well to a wide variety of materials and textures such as concrete, wood, vinyl, brick and aluminum. It offers the UV protection and removes cleanly after the job is done.

See Pro® 924 and Pro® 931.
