Paula creates beautiful, delicate sculptures that blend right in with the natural world. Their intricate shapes evoke honeycombs, fungi, ocean waves, tree rings and other Fibonacci-esque natural patterns.
You might never guess these sculptures were made of tape unless we told you – but they are! Indeed, Paula uses our Pro® 796 pH Neutral Masking Tape to create her delicate (but weather resistant!) works.
Today we asked her a few questions about her tape sculpture practice.
Do you have a website or any social media sites you’d like for us to share with our audience?
My website is www.paulareynaldi.com, and @paulareynaldi on Instagram and Facebook
How long have you been practicing art? Which mediums have you experimented with prior to discovering Pro® 796 tape?
I have been making art all my life. I was a musician and cellist til 2006, and then I took classes in sculpture and other studio art at the University of Georgia.
I have been experimenting with non-traditional materials such as Styrofoam cups, balloons, etc. I made my first pieces with masking tape in 2009, then I revisited the tape medium in 2018.
What is your latest “masking tape” series of artwork inspired by? How did you discover Pro® 796 tape?
My latest masking tape series is called “Taping Nature: Bosque”. It is a series of installations in nature trails inspired by the woods around my home city of Athens, Georgia.
I reuse my pieces in new installations, and each of them is outside for more than 3 weeks. As they need to withstand inclement weather, I was looking for an acid-free masking tape that would be more enduring. That is how I discovered Pro® 796 tape.
What does Pro® 796 allow you to do that other media (i.e. more traditional sculpture materials) does not?
Pro® 796 pH Neutral Masking Tape is light and, at the same time, resistant. It is also very flexible and can be worked in organic patterns that combine or camouflage well with nature.
What are some other qualities of Pro® 796 tape that you appreciate the most?
Its resistance outdoors is certainly the most important quality for me. An additional quality I appreciate is that Pro® 796 is available in more than one width.
What other media do you use alongside Pro® 796 to create your art, and how do they work together?
In my series “Taping Nature: Luz”, I combine my masking tape pieces with lights to create environments. My masking tape sculptures are delicate and porous; they let light shine through, creating varying effects of color and shadows.
