Over the past few years, adhesive tape products have become increasingly popular in the Janitorial and Facility Maintenance Industries. Part of this demand is due to the wide variety of applications tape can be used for, including electrical work, painting, repair, and more.

Another factor in the demand for quality tape products is an increase in construction projects around the world. Rising economies lead to the construction (and the need for cleaning and maintenance) of more commercial and non-commercial buildings.

Now more than ever, it is important to work with experts to identify the best tools for facility managers and cleaning crews.

With over 45 years of experience in pressure sensitive adhesives, Pro Tapes® is an industry leader you can trust. We provide our Janitorial and Maintenance customers with the most efficient and cost effective tape solutions for a variety of needs.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at the most common tapes needed for maintenance, repair, safety and more that Pro Tapes® offers:

Janitors can use Pro Plus electrical tape for wire protection and color coding.

Tapes for Janitorial Electrical Work and Maintenance

Electrical tape is a type of pressure sensitive adhesive used to insulate electrical wires, cables or other materials that conduct electricity. It is typically made with plastics, but vinyl is the most popular type due to its durability and versatility.

Black is the most popular color of electrical tape for insulating purposes. However, our vinyl electrical tape Pro® Plus comes in 11 different colors that allow for color coding and labeling.

You may also be interested in Pro® Friction, a 15mils cotton fabric electrical tape.

Masking tapes are important for protecting surfaces likes walls and floors during janitorial painting projects.

Masking Tapes for Painting and Surface Protection

Masking tape is most commonly used during painting projects to protect surfaces such as walls and floors, either by covering surfaces directly or by holding up protective sheeting. Other applications for masking tape include light bundling and packaging.

Masking tape features an easy to tear paper backing and a light adhesive which allows for easy unwind. The low level of adhesion make it ideal for delicate surfaces. Masking tape will not leave behind residues or cause damages.

Here are the top masking tape products we recommend facility managers to keep in stock:

Duct Tape is used by janitors for quick fixes, repairs, and patching, whether permanent or temporary.

Duct Tapes for Janitorial Repairs and Patching

Duct tape is a strong, waterproof adhesive. The backing is cloth-based and coated in polyethylene.

In the Janitorial industry, duct tape is commonly used for quick fixes, repairs, and patching; either temporarily or permanently. It can also be used for binding and bundling.

Our duct tapes are available in variety of colors to match different surfaces or applications.

Pro Tapes® offers duct tapes to suit a variety of needs for maintenance and repair:

  • Pro® 100 – 7 mils Economy Grade Duct
  • Pro® 110 – 9 mils General Purpose Grade Duct Tape
  • Pro® 120 – 10 mils Industrial Grade Duct Tape
  • Pro® 130 – 12.5 mils Premium Grade Duct Tape
  • Pro® 148 – 17 mils Heavy Duty 10mils Industrial Premium Grade Duct Tape
  • Pro® 160 – Transparent Duct Tape
Janitorial professionals can use barricade tapes for safety during events.

Safety Barricade Tapes for A/V, Events and More

Barricade tapes perform an important role in supporting safety measures, whether for daily janitorial use or special events such as assemblies, meetings, etc. Janitorial and facility maintenance teams can also help support audio/visual teams with barricade tapes.

Some tapes, like our Caution Ribbon, are actually non-adhesive. Caution Ribbon is a yellow polyethylene tape with caution messaging printed on one side. It is used as a visual warning and to limit access to a work area, which can be critical to safety during repair and maintenance projects.

Other type of safety tapes that do feature an adhesive or sticky side can be used for floor marking or wire and cable hold down. Our Cable Path® adhesive tape protects cables while simultaneously warning passersby of a trip hazard or possible hazardous area.

Other barricade and safety tapes we recommend for janitorial and maintenance include:

Today we chat with Watson Wu, a professional sound designer and sound effects recording artist who has worked for big names in the film, TV and video game industries. He’s also a big fan of Pro Gaff® – let’s find out why!

Hey Watson, thanks for talking with us today! You share all kinds of amazing projects on your social media. Do you have any links you’d like to share with our audience?

Thanks!

My website: watsonwu.com

Instagram: @WatsonWuStudios

Facebook: Watson Wu

Twitter: @WatsonWu

LinkedIn: Watson Wu

What do you do as a sound designer? What are you passionate about?

Companies and other sound designers in the video game, film, and TV industries hire me to either design sound effects or record hard-to-get sound effects for their products.

Most of my requests involve capturing extremely LOUD sounds such as race cars, live firing of weapons, explosions, etc. extreme items.

I’m a recording and recording gear addict. Testing out certain microphones, recorders, audio plugins, etc are essential for my work.

Watson Wu guest speaking at Clemson University

How did you get into professional sound design?

I went to both Miami-Dade College and Florida International University for Music Education with a heavy concentration in Music Composition.

While writing music for a video game one day, my client asked if I could also design sound effects for their game. I gave it a shot and the client really liked the results!

Because sound effect libraries (where you can download sound effects to use in projects) back then were very limited, I decided to record my own for better performed sounds and at much higher fidelity. I had already owned various microphones and portable field recorders, so the transition was seamless.

Watson Wu ready to record sound from a Porsche Carerra GT for Transformers

What have been some highlights of your sound design career so far?

Some of my career highlights as a sound designer include working on prominent projects such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare, RIGS, Transformers, to Pennzoil and Mercedes-AMG commercials.

I consider these highlights personally because “sound” was in the foreground of each of these projects, rather than a detail forgotten in the background.

Other highlights include being invited as a guest speaker for Sega, EA (Electronic Arts), Clemson University, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and MIGS (Montreal International Games Summit).

Watson Wu guest speaking at the Montreal International Games Summit

Which Pro Tapes® products do you use in your sound design work?

I mostly use Pro Gaff® gaffer tape. It’s able to secure my microphones and microphone cables on speedy race cars going well over 150mph. Moreover, Pro Gaff® can be removed without damaging expensive paint from vehicles of all types. There is nothing better than Pro Gaff®!

I also use Pro® Spike Tape (which comes in several bright colors) to label the end of cables with what brand and model the microphone is and what recording channel to plug it into. This is quite useful when all the cables are the same black color, LOL!

Watson Wu used Pro Gaff® to tape down cables for sound effect capture on this truck

Are there any memorable sound design projects where Pro Gaff® made a big difference?

When I was hired to fly into Vancouver to record a high-end Mercedes-AMG e63S car. Stunt sounds were needed to present the extremeness that the AMG car can handle. I knew I had to use Pro Gaff®.  There was so much tire and brake smoke from drifting, cornering, and other maneuvers, but the Pro Gaff® never fell off, keeping my mics and mic cables secured on the car!

Watson Wu rigging microphones to a Mercedes-AMG e63S car using Pro Gaff® tape

One other memorable project was for the video game, Planet Coaster. I was hired to record various roller coaster sounds. Frontier Developments wanted to capture sounds that would fit a 1st person (rider’s perspective) and 3rd person perspective. Pro Gaff® was definitely needed to secure mics and mic cables on the rides, especially the fast-spinning ones!

What advice would you share for other sound designers on how to use Pro Tapes® products to enhance their work?

Think of how orchestras do many rehearsals before a concert. Try applying Pro Tapes® adhesive tape products on various mics and mic cables, and see how well the items stay on the subject. Remember, safety is number one!

Thanks for your time Watson! Do you have any exciting plans for the near future that you can share with us?

I recently recorded another fast and LOUD race car for a game. It was comical how much tape I had to apply on the car’s side to capture exhaust sounds! I’ll be sure to share more when the game releases.

Again, safety is number one, so always use more Pro Gaff® tape!!

Protect sanitized surfaces and inhibit the growth of bacteria with 3M™ Durable Protective Film. Learn more about this new product, and discover what Pro Tapes® can offer you, too!

These days, facility managers in schools, universities, gyms, medical offices, and more, have implemented expansive new sanitizing procedures to combat the spread of Covid-19 and other communicable diseases.

Unfortunately, harsh cleaning chemicals used in these processes can wear down surfaces over time. For this reason, 3M™ has developed a new product which tackles both issues at once.

Protect Sanitized Surfaces with 3M™ Technology

Introducing: 3M™ Durable Protective Film.

3M™ Durable Protective Film is engineered with an EPA-registered silver ion antimicrobial hardcoat. The hardcoat has been put through the Taber Test Method, and is confirmed to give your surfaces a boost to their abrasion resistance.

In addition, the antimicrobial agent interferes with the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew, to protect surfaces longer between cleanings.

Watch our Demo Video:

Frequently sanitized surfaces where 3M™ Durable Protective Film could be used

There are many surfaces which can benefit from the additional protection of 3M™ Durable Protective Film. To give you an idea, here are a few key surfaces that are often “high-touch” areas which require additional sanitation:

  • ATMs, Point-of-Sale keypads
  • Door handles, elevator buttons, light switches
  • School desks, benches, handrails
  • Shopping carts
  • Phones, tablets, and other touch screens
  • Airport kiosks
  • Restaurant tables and counter tops
  • Medical/dental tables and counter tops
3M Durable Protective Film can be used on high touch surfaces like tablets, desks, handrails, and more

Two product options:

Different surfaces and applications require different approaches. To this end, we provide two versions of 3M™ Durable Protective Films to best suit your end application.

3M™ Durable Protective Film 7750AM (Permanent)

  • Utilizes 3M™ Adhesive 400 for clarity and resistance to yellowing (when exposed to UV light)
  • High clarity/transparency
  • Excellent for permanent to semi-permanent applications

3M™ Durable Protective Film 7760AM (Removable)

  • Utilizes 3M™ Adhesive R3500 for good initial tack
  • Offers excellent UV resistance
  • Excellent removability; removes from most substrates*

*The user will have to determine if this product is suitable for the intended application

For additional guidelines on sanitizing protocols to follow in your facility, please visit the CDC’s page on Cleaning and Disinfecting your Facility.

3M Durable Protective Film is engineered with a silver ion microbial hardcoat which protects from abrasian and inhibits the growth of germs

Whether you’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, you can improve your mind-muscle coordination with an at-home workout using agility ladders! They’re a great way to improve your coordination and drive up your heart rate.

Agility ladders are a great alternative to cardio activities like running. This exercise won’t just push your body out of its comfort zone, it also challenges your brain!

Example of an Agility Ladder made with Pro Gaff®

What is an agility ladder?

An agility ladder is a piece of exercise equipment that looks much like a ladder (hence the name) but laid down flat on the floor. You use this “ladder” as a visual guide to perform various exercises that increase your agility, like jumping between the “rungs” of the ladder. Agility ladders are a great way to improve your coordination and drive up your heart rate!

Why should you use an agility ladder to workout?

  • When used as a warmup, it can help to prevent injuries
  • Helps with practicing general footwork and coordination
  • An interesting and fun way to build up your calves & cardiovascular endurance.
  • Helps with mind-body connection
  • Acceleration and deceleration movements help your stabilization
  • Improve your agility with multidirectional movements.
  • Improve your speed by doing linear run troughs
  • Do lateral running
  • Work on your balance by hopping on one leg
  • Work on your core muscles by crawling the length of the agility ladder
Jumping side to side across the Pro Gaff® agility ladder

Use Pro Gaff® to spice up your workout with a CUSTOM, multi-colored agility ladder!

You could purchase an inexpensive agility ladder that rolls out like a mat on the floor, but we’ve got an even better idea! Use Pro Gaff® to make your own agility ladders! Pro Gaff® lets you customize the appearance of your agility ladder, is very portable, and lets you set it up and tear it down anywhere.

Pro Gaff® removes cleanly from hardwood floors and carpet. Using tape for an agility ladder is a great idea for beginners because tape lays down flat, so there’s no risk of tripping over the edges of a traditional roll-out agility ladder.

Hopping through the Pro Gaff® agility ladder

Personalization is a great perk of using Pro Gaff® to make your own agility ladders! Pro Gaff® comes in 20 colors (including 5 fluorescent colors) so it’s bound to have your favorite color and color combinations to personalize your agility ladder.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice to the tape industry, been entering or processing orders for some time or an experienced veteran selling adhesives for years; there’s always more to learn about the applications in which tape is being used. The Pro Tapes® Solutions Team is here to assist you through the process of selecting the right tape product for your adhesive needs. Time, temperature, conditions and surface are four factors to consider when determining the suitability of a tape product for the application.

1: Time

Consider how long the tape will remain on the desired surface.

Initial thoughts on time usually steer towards, how long a tape will remain on the intended surface, such as: hours, days, months or years? Will the tape be intended for temporary or permanent use? Although it’s usually an afterthought, or not a thought at all to your average user, it’s just as important to ask: does the bond strength need to be immediate or stronger over time? Most adhesives will cure and reach maximum bond after 24 hours.

2: Temperature

What is the max temperature resistance for tape

What is the max temperature resistance that needs to be met and for how long? Is short term or long term high temperature resistance required? An application may require intermittent or short term exposure to 400°F baking cycles and remove cleanly when done. This is often a requirement in automotive masking tapes used in automobile body painting. An example of long term temperature resistance may be exposure to heat and freezing temperatures permanently. Pro Tapes® has a variety of butyl tapes, like Pro® Flex, that are made for waterproof sealing and remain stable (even in fluctuating changes) in temperatures from -70°F to 200°F. Pro Tapes® liner of butyl and EHB tapes are unique because they are permanent and can withstand extreme changes or fluctuations in weather temperature or conditions within hours.

3: Conditions

What elements will the tape be exposed to?

What elements will the tape be exposed to? Will the tape be used indoors or outdoors? There are many factors to consider in regards to conditions. Some indoor factors include: storage conditions, humidity, chemicals and dust. Some outdoor factors include: UV rays, water, wind, ice, humidity, chemical and acid contact. Exposure to outdoor elements such as submersion under chlorine or salt water or air pressure during aviation can cause strain on the shelf-life of some tapes.

4: Surface

What type of surface is the tape adhering to?

What type of surface is the tape adhering to? Is this a LSE or HSE surface the tape is adhering to? LSE or Low Surface Energy is solvent less surfaces and can’t handle high temperatures. Some examples of LSE surfaces are some plastics (fluoride film, acetal), polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl, PTFE and powder coated paints. HSE or High Surface Energy solvent based surfaces that can handle high temperatures. Some examples of HSE surfaces are metals (copper, zinc, tin, aluminum, lead, stainless steel, glass porcelain) and some plastics (kapton film, PVC, polyester, epoxy, paint, polyurethane paint and polycarbonate). Another complicated surface to consider is direct skin contact. Usually, the higher the surface energy the higher the adhesion that is required to stick.

Bland, boring walls? Not allowed to paint? Well here are 4 Pro Tapes® approved solutions for you.

Solution 1:

Cover ugly, or bland walls with your favorite tapestry, sheet, poster, etc., WITHOUT leaving holes in your fabric or your walls and it only takes 3 easy steps!

What you need:

  • Standard clothes pins
  • UGlu®
  • A tapestry, sheet or poster that you wish to hang

Step 1: Apply UGlu® to back of the clothes pins

Use as many as you feel you need to get your cloth piece to lay flat and not sag. The larger it is, the more clothes pins you will need!

Step 2: Remove liner and place UGlu® side of clothes pins to wall (measure first).

Solution 2:

Do you want a statement wall but aren’t allowed to paint? Well guess what? Solution 2 will show you just how to achieve that awesome statement wall with nothing more than just UGlu® and placemats!

What you need:

Step 1: Pick out your placemats!

You can choose one type to cover the entire wall, or you can get funky with it and alternate colors/patterns, it’s up to you!

Solution 3:

Solution 3 is all about improvising! Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive…if you don’t have something, you don’t necessarily have to go out and buy it. For this hack all you will need is a roll or two of our clean removal, colorful tapes!

What you need:

Pro® 46 is a colored masking tape, Pro Gaff® is a cloth tape and Pro® Sheen is a metalized polyester film tape. All three of these tapes remove clean and come is a variety of muted and fluorescent colors! With that being said, you can create anything with these tapes! For this solution, you can create faux frame using these four tapes.

Solution 4:

This is another solution where tape conquers all. In this DIY, you can transform any surface into a statement piece.

What you need:
Doors, drawers, walls, counter tops (decorate-able surfaces)

By simply applying any, or all of these three tapes to a surface that desperately needs some “TLC”, it will instantly dress up your space and make it look as if you had a professional designer come in and design your dorm room or apartment. It’s the little things that make a huge impact!

Note: Clean surface with rubbing alcohol prior to application of tape. Allow alcohol to dry completely before application for optimal results!
